« Prepaid cards are a new market in France. This nascent market will soon develop further. We estimate that it will reach about €17 billion in outstanding credit for around 20 million users by the end of 2015. In comparison, the bank card market represents €450 billion, while the e-commerce market represents €30 billion. »

What is Natixis’ vision for the prepaid card market?

« Given the size of this market, there will not be a plethora of players, but a certain number of French and European players will occupy leading positions. The market will structure itself around these players. We are already seeing issuers of printed vouchers coming to the fore, including Natixis. »

Who do these cards target?

[Christophe Girod]

« There are several uses for the cards.
The first and most well-known is gift card. Gift cards replace the cash and cheques that are typically given in small envelopes under the Christmas tree.
The second use of prepaid cards is to replace management systems that lack flexibility and security, especially in companies. The best example is the meal voucher.
There is also a third reason to use the cards. They increase the visibility of the transfer or cheque issuer, which has not been the case up until now. The advantage of plastic cards is that they offer an additional communication opportunity to the individual, company or institution initiating the transaction; for example, a local authority paying subsidies or a company looking to perform a simple customer refund.
The fourth use of prepaid cards is primarily for individuals who do not use banks, or only in a limited way, for example those who only have savings accounts. Young people immediately come to mind for this kind of use. »
